Michael has been involved in Chapel Hill real estate for over 35 years, holding a license since 1974. Michael returns full time to his “first love” of real estate after 15 years of operating Chapel Hill’s landmark clothing store, Julian’s, on Franklin Street.
He came to Chapel Hill from Statesville, NC in 1968 as a freshman at UNC, putting himself through the University working for JP Goforth and Security Building Company. Michael experienced first-hand the development of many of the most sought after homes and neighborhoods in Chapel Hill from conception to construction to client closings. These neighborhoods, such as Sedgefield, Stoneridge, Northwood, Coker Hills, Ironwoods, The Oaks II, included projects further afield such as Landfall in Wilmington , NC .
In 1990, Michael became Director of the UNC Property Department, handling leasing, rentals, property acquisition, and historical assets. One of his favorite responsibilities was overseeing readiness of the Chancellor’s residence when it was relocated to Quail Hill, the former residence of George Watts Hill.
When his father-in-law, Maurice Julian died in 1993, Julian’s had become a Chapel Hill institution. Michael joined the legendary clothing store as CFO after his wife Missy took over the store and, soon, added sales to his repertoire – from khakis to custom suits! He advised many, many gentlemen and the women who shopped for them about fit, fashion, and true value. Michael and his family expanded upon the “traditions” of Julian’s, growing the business and its reach in the community. He continues to manage the family’s commercial properties in the area.
He has been an active supporter of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center , Downtown Chapel Hill, The Chapel Hill Historical Society, Carolina ’s Performing Arts, The Hill Center, the Mary and Maurice Julian Scholarship for Need Based Students at UNC-CH.
Michael’s breadth of experience from the ground floor of construction and development, long hours handling clients’ punch lists and closings, attention to detail, high standards of quality, knowledge of Town & Gown, and sincere commitment to customer service make him a great choice for your Realtor.
